USSM Electrowinning System

COMPLETED 2024

Project Information

The USSM electrowinning system constitutes a critical unit operation within the hydrometallurgical flowsheet at the Madison mine site, designed to produce cobalt and nickel sulfates, lithium carbonate crystals, and London Metal Exchange (LME) Grade A copper cathodes from both primary (concentrated ore) and secondary (recycled battery) feedstocks.

The electrowinning system recovers copper from the rich electrolyte solution advanced from solvent extraction (SX) to produce high-purity copper cathodes, with the lean electrolyte returned to SX stripping. The system has a nominal production rate of 0.325 t/h and a maximum production rate of 0.4 t/h of LME Grade A copper cathodes.

The project was executed by Iontech 2000 JSC, in collaboration with CAID Industries, a division of Samuel, Son & Co., and METTOP GmbH.
