The project involves the reprocessing of historical copper tailings stored at the Arjaa and Mawarid tailings dams, in the Sultanate of Oman — residual material from earlier flotation concentrator operations that has accumulated significant volumes of unrecovered copper, representing both an environmental liability and an opportunity for resource recovery.
To extract the remaining copper content, a modern processing facility was constructed using advanced hydrometallurgical technologies. The operation starts with an agitation leaching circuit designed to dissolve copper under controlled conditions. The resulting pregnant leach solution (PLS) is then subjected to solvent extraction (SX), through which copper is selectively separated from impurities, followed by electrowinning (EW) to deposit high-purity copper onto cathodes, producing LME Grade A copper.
