Zhezkazgan Tailings Leach Project

COMPLETED 2009

Project Information

The Zhezkazgan Tailings Leach Project was developed to recover copper from tailings material, with a design capacity of 2,000 tonnes per annum of cathode copper — unlocking additional value from legacy tailings while mitigating the long-term environmental impact of historical mining operations. Extensive metallurgical testwork formed the foundation of the study, supporting the process flowsheet and detailed process specifications.

The finalized process design incorporated agitation leaching, solid liquid separation, ion exchange, solvent extraction, and electrowinning, followed by leach residue neutralization, enabling efficient copper recovery and safe stabilization of leach residues.
